Boosted Safe vs Tuffy: a console safe, or a safe on the anchors.

Closed Boosted Safe with its quilted leather top sitting on a truck's back seat

Tuffy Security Products makes console safes fitted by console type and year. Boosted Safe clips to the rear lower anchors (LATCH, called ISOFIX outside the US) and looks like a booster seat. We make the Boosted Safe, so weigh our view with that in mind. Below: what Tuffy says, where it is the better buy, and what we filmed.

We state only what we read on Tuffy’s own truck guide and its 2021-2024 Ford F-150 page. Sizes and locks vary by model, so read the page for yours. We make the Boosted Safe, so read this knowing that.

Fair is fair

Where a Tuffy is the better buy.

If one of these is the job, buy the Tuffy. We would rather you owned the right safe.

  • It stays out of sight.A console safe sits inside the factory console with the lid closed.
  • Every seat stays free.It takes no seat. Ours takes one outer rear seat while installed.
  • It is fitted to that console.Tuffy says fit goes by console type as well as year, with different safes for full-floor and flow-through consoles.
  • It says what it does.Tuffy describes its security as concealment plus delay. We agree with the approach: with enough time and tools, nothing is secure.

Where we win

Where Boosted Safe is the better buy.

If you change vehicles, or carry more than fits under an armrest, these matter more.

  • It moves to your next car.No drilling. No tools. It moves between cars, to any car with lower anchors in the back seat. A console safe is fitted to one console.
  • It has to be opened first. Two steel latches clip to the rear lower anchors. The release is inside the locked safe, so it must be opened before it comes off the car. See the full test results.
  • Room for a laptop.15.1 × 13.6 × 4.25 in inside. It fits a 16-inch MacBook Pro. For a console safe, check the inside size and lid opening on the listing for your model.
  • It looks like a booster seat. The Mini is a certified booster seat (FMVSS 213) with a locked compartment. If a thief beats any of them, we send you a new safe, free.

Trucks

Does it fit my truck?

Boosted Safe needs a back seat with lower anchors. US vehicles from model year 2003 are required to have them, except trucks over 8,500 lb GVWR, so check yours before you order. A regular cab with no back seat has nowhere for it to go.

The tests

What we filmed, and what we did not.

A screwdriver pried the Basic open at 2 minutes 20 seconds. The Elite stayed shut through hand tools and hammers for five minutes and was damaged. The Golden Gate Elite opened after the five-minute clock ran out. With enough time and tools, nothing is secure. We did not test Tuffy on film.

Boosted Safe vs Tuffy: straight answers.

What is the difference between Boosted Safe and a Tuffy console safe?

Where it sits and how it is held. A Tuffy console safe sits inside the factory console and leaves the seats free. Boosted Safe clips to the rear lower anchors on the back seat with two steel latches, its release is inside the locked safe, and it moves between cars. It takes one outer rear seat while installed. We make the Boosted Safe, so weigh our view with that in mind.

Does a Tuffy console safe need drilling?

Tuffy says most of its console safes need no drilling and take about 30 minutes with hand tools, and that some vehicles do require drilling (Tuffy truck guide). A Boosted Safe needs no drilling and no tools.

Will a Tuffy console safe fit my truck?

It depends on your console as well as your year. Tuffy says full-floor and flow-through consoles take different safes. Check its console safe listings for your exact truck.

What steel and locks does a Tuffy console safe use?

Read the listing for your model. We state a Tuffy figure only after reading it on Tuffy’s page for that model, so we do not quote one here. For comparison, our Elite is 16-gauge steel with fingerprint, keypad and backup key. Our Golden Gate Elite is 12-gauge steel.

Does a laptop fit in a Tuffy console safe?

Check the inside size and lid opening on the listing for your model. The Boosted Safe Elite is 15.1 × 13.6 × 4.25 in inside and fits a 16-inch MacBook Pro.

Have you tested a Tuffy safe?

No. We did not test Tuffy on film, so we make no claim about how one holds. We make the Boosted Safe, so weigh our view with that in mind. See what we did test.

Can either one be beaten?

Yes. With enough time and tools, nothing is secure. On film, a screwdriver pried the Basic open at 2 minutes 20 seconds. The Elite stayed shut through hand tools and hammers for five minutes and was damaged. The Golden Gate Elite opened after the five-minute clock ran out. We did not test Tuffy on film. If a thief does beat a Boosted Safe, we send you a new safe, free. See the full results.

Can I keep a gun in a Boosted Safe?

Yes, handguns, stored unloaded. The Golden Gate Elite is the one certified for firearms: 12-gauge steel, 37 lb, on the California DOJ roster (see the listing). Laws differ by state: see where it is legal to keep a gun in a car. This is not legal advice.

Will a Boosted Safe fit my car?

If the back seat has lower anchors, it fits. US vehicles from model year 2003 are required to have them, except trucks over 8,500 lb GVWR, so check your vehicle. It takes one outer rear seat while installed.

Which Boosted Safe should I pick?

Start with the Elite: fingerprint, keypad, backup key and USB-C for emergency power. The Basic opens with a code and key. The Mini is a certified booster seat (FMVSS 213) with a locked compartment and the smallest footprint. The Golden Gate Elite is the one certified for firearms.

What comes with a Boosted Safe?

30-day money back. Lifetime warranty. Break-in replacement guarantee: if a thief beats it, we send a new safe, free. See the terms.
