Car safe test results
Seven car safes. Every time on film.
We filmed two first-time testers setting up seven car safes, pulling them off a mock car seat by hand, then going at them with tools. Every safe on a cable or tether came free by hand, the fastest in 3 seconds. The Boosted Safe Basic and Elite, latched to the LATCH anchors, did not come off in 30 seconds of pulling. A screwdriver pried the Basic open at 2 minutes 20 seconds, and the Elite stayed shut for the full 5 minutes. We make the Boosted Safe, so weigh that as you read.
The numbers
Every safe, every round.
Published June 30, 2026. Times come from the film’s own clock and score cards.
Fastest time to pull it off the seat by hand
Both testers pulled at each safe, and these are the faster of the two times. The latched safes got 30 seconds of pulling, then tools. The Golden Gate Elite went straight to tools.
All the results
| Safe | Held to the seat by | Setup, 5-minute limit | Pulling by hand | Tools or code guessing | What fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Boosted Safe Elite | LATCH anchors | 5:30, past the limit, on an older test unit with batteries to install. Newer units have them pre-installed. | Did not come off in 30 seconds of pulling. | Stayed shut through hand tools and hammers for the full 5 minutes. The testers damaged it. | Three handguns. Or a laptop, phone and battery. |
| Boosted Safe Basic | LATCH anchors | 2:32 | Did not come off in 30 seconds of pulling. | A screwdriver pried it open at 2:20. | Two handguns, a phone, a battery and a laptop. |
| Golden Gate Elite | LATCH anchors | Not timed. | Went straight to tools. | Sledgehammer and grinder. Did not open within 5 minutes. Opened after the clock ran out. | Not in the fit round. |
| Amazon Basics | Cable | Under 2:00 and just over 5:00. | Came free at 0:50 and 1:52. The lid deformed and the cable stayed intact. | No tool round. | A P365. A Maxim 9 and an M4 in .22 did not fit. |
| BillConch | Cable | 5:00 with coaching. The other tester could not set a code. | Came free at 0:27 and 0:46. The film says the wire was the weak point. | No tool round. | A phone, a P365 and a Maxim 9 with a suppressor. A laptop and an M4 in .22 did not fit. |
| StopBox | Cable | 3:36. The other tester could not change the code in time. The reset meant taking the box apart with a screwdriver. | Came free at 0:07 and 0:09. | With codes reset out of view, one box was guessed in under 14 seconds and the other in 1:10. | A P365. A Maxim 9 barely fit the larger box. |
| Vaultek ViSN | Tether | No new code by 5:00. Batteries were not in the box. | Came free at 0:03 and 0:07, at the tip of the tether. | No tool round. | A P365 and a phone. A Maxim 9 barely fit. A laptop did not. |
One filmed test, one day, specific units and two people. It is useful for comparison, but it does not predict every theft. Products can change after filming. Firearms were tested for fit only and are stored unloaded.
What the pull round shows
The weak point was how the safe was held to the seat.
Some of these are well-built boxes. In this test the cable, the tether or the spot where it joins the box gave first, so the box left the seat without being opened. A Boosted Safe has to be opened before it comes off the anchors, so the fight moves to the lock and the steel.
How we ran it
Two testers, one mock seat, three rounds.
Neither tester had set up these safes before. The seat is a car seat fitted with child-seat anchors on a stand, not a car.
- Round 1: set it upOut of the box, set a new code and attach it to the seat. Five-minute limit.
- Round 2: rip it outPull by hand first. Anchored safes got 30 seconds of pulling, then tools, with a five-minute clock.
- Round 3: what fitsThe same handguns, phone, battery and laptop in each safe.

Questions about the results.
Which car safe came off fastest?
The Vaultek ViSN came free at 3 seconds, at the tip of its tether. The two StopBox boxes took 7 and 9 seconds. Every safe on a cable or tether came off by hand in under 2 minutes.
Which car safe held up best?
The Boosted Safe Elite stayed shut through hand tools and hammers for the full 5 minutes, and the testers damaged it. The Golden Gate Elite held out past the 5-minute clock against a sledgehammer and a grinder, then opened. We make both, so weigh that. With enough time and tools, nothing is secure.
Did the Boosted Safe get opened?
Yes. A screwdriver pried the Basic open at 2 minutes 20 seconds. The Golden Gate Elite opened after the 5 minutes ran out. The film shows both.
Is this a lab test?
No. It is one filmed test on a mock car seat with two people and the tools you see. We ran it and we make three of the safes in it. It is useful for comparison, and it does not predict every theft.
Did you test Console Vault?
No. Console vaults fit into one vehicle’s console, so they weren’t in this test. Our console safe guide covers how they compare.
Can I use these results?
Yes. Please credit Boosted Safe and link to this page. The numbers are in the CSV above, and the press page has more.
