Car Safe Rip-Out Test Video: Seven Safes, Full Transcript

This video shows two first-time testers setting up seven car safes, then trying to rip each one off a mock car seat and break in within five minutes.

Every safe held by a cable came off by hand. The two StopBox boxes took 7 and 9 seconds. The fastest pull on the Amazon Basics box and on the Billconch each took under a minute. The Vaultek ViSN came free at the tip of its tether.

The Boosted Safe Basic and Elite clip to LATCH anchors (called ISOFIX outside the US), and neither came off the anchors in the pull round. A screwdriver pried the Basic open at 2 minutes 20 seconds. The Elite stayed shut through hand tools and hammers for the full five minutes. The Golden Gate Elite opened after the five minutes ran out, with a sledgehammer and a grinder. Firearms are stored unloaded.

With enough time and tools nothing is secure. The job is to raise the time and the tool count. The written results are on the pull test page.

00 Today we're out here doing some testing on different safes. We're trying to find out what is the best safe for your vehicle, best safe for your personal protection. Our first safe up is going to be the Amazon Basics safe. It's like [...] and we're just gonna see how long it takes them to set it up and get it attached to something. There we go. You got to set up a new code, and you have to have it attached to the chair somehow. Doesn't matter how.

27 This is a very basic type of box, three combination lock, so most places wouldn't consider that a safe. It looks like Austin's got it secured to the seat, and does he have a new code set? That's the question. Is it a new code? Time. Less than two minutes.

55 This is our [...] safe. This is the Billconch. It's a highly rated safe. I think it looks like a pretty good product. Here we go, boys. On your marks, get set, go. Straight out of the box, they got to learn about it. They got to figure it out themselves. I mean, maybe you're not doing a competition, but you know, is it a good safe? Is it something that I can actually do, or am I gonna be returning the thing because I can't figure it out? So we've got our... Lance has already moved on to the cable. Remember, we have to have at least one unique code put on the safe as well, and then the safe securely attached to the chair. And that's how we're gonna know that your setup is complete. And you can throw in the towel if you want.

36 Okay, that's five minutes for Lance. Is that it? You got your new code in there? Might have to hit the enter button. There you go, a little bit of help from the coach. Technically Lance had it set up at five minutes exactly. The safe beat Austin. So tell me your frustration, Austin. I tried doing the erase button, didn't do anything. I tried holding the erase button, didn't do anything. You're able to get the safe open with the key, but still weren't able to reset that [inaudible].

59 Ah, I don't even know. I think I paid like [...]. This is like their buy one, get one free. So we got the full-size one and a compact. All you have to do is set up a new code, attach it to the chair. First one to do so wins. Three, two, one, let's go. This is our first composite box. If it takes more than five minutes to get one code in, the box loses, and either your instructions suck or your box sucks, one of the two. Five minutes is gonna cause anybody frustration. I didn't realize that you had to kind of take it apart to reset the code. He's in. Three minutes and 36 seconds. It's a bust. The StopBox beat Lance. He didn't get it switched. He didn't get the combo changed in the allotted five minutes.

39 Up next we've got the Vaultek ViSN. One thing that we just noticed is they do not include batteries. This is a [...] safe. And we are ready in three, two, one. Let's go. Downside of a safe like this, with the Wi-Fi and all the other trinkets and gadgets, is it's very power hungry. We are currently three minutes in, and it feels like the longest learning curve so far. But I think it looks pretty sick. Sincerely, the goal here is just to find out what the best safe is. Maybe one of these safes fits a better use case for you. If the [...] one fits your needs, great. If this [...] one fits your needs, great. If mine fits your needs, great. But be safe. Officially we did hit our five-minute cutoff. So far all the other safes have been set up in less than five minutes. So this one has taken the longest so far just to get a single code put in.

31 The Boosted Safe Basic. This is our non-smart lock edition. No batteries needed. These gentlemen are going to get it attached to the chairs and then set a code. If it takes more than five minutes, then I have failed. Neither of you have set these up before? Nope. Okay. On your mark, get set, let's go. Boosted Safe is a car safe designed for your car, made for your car, latches into the back seat of your car. Minute 30 so far. All right, time. 2:32 for Austin. This is exciting for me because this is the first time I've ever seen somebody try to figure that out, to set it up.

28 So we've got the Boosted Safe Elite here. This is our flagship product. It's got the biometric fingerprint or combination or key. Similar to the Basic model, where it attaches into the seats. Set it up, get it attached, and first one to have a new code with it attached to the seat wins. On your marks, get set, go. Three seconds in. Two minutes and 30 seconds in. Oh no, you have the emergency lockout noise. This is your time to shine here, Lance. Nice. Five minutes and 30 seconds. I would say I, you know, didn't know what direction the batteries went first. Full disclosure, our newest versions... this is the previous one. Our newest versions have the batteries pre-installed. So we'll take off a minute for that one. Other than that, pretty straightforward, I thought. I like the way it's hooked. I don't see any bad right now. I like the way the code is. I like the key.

36 Onto the pull test, everybody. All right, so step one as far as removability. We're gonna have a pull test to see if you can yank this free. See if the strap breaks or if anything else on the safe breaks, and if you can't yank it free then that's a win. Give it a go, boys. Might have to chain it to a car instead. It looks like Lance is actually making pretty good headway. Oh, there we go. That's incredible. So that took less than a minute to break free from the cable. Gonna see if you can do it in the next 10 seconds. If not, we'll move on to some scissors. There it is, you got it. I'm actually pretty surprised at how easy that was. If you have the strength of a grown man, you can rip that safe free.

40 It was pretty simple. Cable's just long enough where it would hang on the seat and you could just step on it and break it right off. You could put it in the door and slam the door shut and break it off. Definitely seemed like the weak point was the shell itself, just deforming it out of the way, and you can pull the cable off if you get enough leverage on it. That kick got it out. It's a metal. I don't know the gauge, but I mean it doesn't seem flexible by hand, but when you really leverage on it, it bends. I mean, I can kind of pull it a little bit too. So the weak point was not the cable itself. The cable stayed intact. It was actually just the deforming of the lid. So we'll see if the next safe pans out any better. We will do some more destructive tests on these later, but for now we'll move on to the [...] safe. So this was our [...] safe. We got it up. But I think it's like [...] safe next, and we'll see if that does any better.

34 You got to try for at least 30 seconds using only your manpower, and then after that you can move on to the next tool. But the caveat: whoever gets it off with the lowest tool within five minutes wins. Let's go. Lance got his free. Keep going. Let's see how long it takes you. That was less than a minute. Okay, that surprised me. I thought that this one was gonna do a lot better, but the weak point here, actually, it looks like it wasn't the safe itself. It was the wire. I don't like cables at all. That's why I designed my safe to not have cables. We will do some destructive testing on this later, but it doesn't really matter, because as soon as somebody can get that free and take it home, your stuff's gone anyway. Whether or not they can get into it later, your stuff's gone.

34 Honestly, I was a little surprised. It does seem like a very nice safe. And as I was yanking on it, I could see, you know, the shell of it starting to stand out there, and I thought maybe it would pull the bolt out. I was surprised that the cable gave away. I was pretty surprised how heavy the safe is and that small cable. Just gave me the momentum to break it right off. So the weight of the safe was actually the thing that helped you remove it from the car. That's a pretty thin gauge cable too. The Amazon one's substantially thicker. So the [...] safe, it's got to be twice the diameter, right? Good job, Amazon Basics, on your cable. Bad job, Billconch.

13 We're going to do the pull test, and if you can't do the pull, then again you get to move on to the tools. First one to get it free wins. Three, two, one, go. Oh, seven seconds. Oh, nine seconds. That was surprising. So they've got their boxes. Austin, what would you think? Well, it is, I mean, it's very fast to get into, not really helpful in a car. Plastic just breaks. Well, we both picked it in, what, barely around a minute, the most. But as soon as you pick it up you can tell [inaudible].

54 Next we've got the Vaultek. It feels like the strongest build so far. Cable seems sturdy. On your mark, get set, go. Oh my gosh. Oh my gosh. It felt hefty. It felt like it was going to be strong, and I think the inertia from the weight of it just ripped it right off. The failure point of all these has been that tip. I think that Vaultek probably has a good product for a [...] safe, but for the tether, again, the tether is the weak point. It seems like a nice safe. Just not for maybe putting in a car.

36 They are both hooked up. They both use the ISOFIX connection points, which are the baby seat anchors [...]. Right and left seats have these hooks that are both 11 inches apart. Our safes securely attach into those hooks, just with a simple click. Lance gets extra points because he left the booster seat disguise on. Austin, you got the safe on, that's the most important part. Get set, go. 30 seconds starts now. Okay, your 30 seconds is up if you want to try to use another tool. We got the first tool out of the day. First tool of the day, a screwdriver. This is exciting. Oh, he's going [inaudible] the chopsticks. So if you can make something deformed, that makes it... Oh, Austin got in. Two minutes and 20 seconds. Lance gives up. Also was able to get in. He was able to bend some of the bars in here, which is a pretty interesting way of getting in there.

34 All right, so we've got both safes attached securely to the chairs. Three, two, one, go. So far a little bit stronger than the cable ties. So you're welcome to move on to power tools or hand tools or whatever you want. The magnets. Next up he's going for the hammer. We are two minutes in. This is exciting. I like seeing the different methods of operation here. Three minutes 30 seconds. Three, two, one. Hammers down. I'm really impressed with how far you got in with those. Good news, contents safe. Police are on their way. They weren't able to get in. Bad news is that these are messed up.

31 Let's move on to the Golden Gate. This next safe is essentially the same as this Boosted Safe Elite. It's got the biometrics, it's got the keys, it's got the fingerprints, but it's specifically engineered to protect your most valuable items, your firearms. It was engineered to meet all the different standards that California has to be considered a safe. One of them is it has to have at least 10,000 different permutations. Ours has over 450,000 different permutations you can use. You can't be able to pry it open so that a kid could reach their hand in there and grab anything. We over-engineered this bad boy and I'm excited to see how well it holds up. On this one, I'm actually going to just put the prize money inside the safe, and they have to keep going until it's open. So there you go. I have faith. You got five minutes, first one in wins the money. If you don't think you're going to be able to get in with anything, like try a sledgehammer or try a grinder. Do whatever, make it fun. You want some beef jerky? On your mark, get set, go.

38 Hopefully Austin doesn't care what's inside the safe. Two minutes in, you still got three minutes, Austin. You still got three minutes. At some point I do want to see that freaking Sawzall or the grinder on this bad boy. Austin's back to the sledgehammer. Three minutes 30 seconds. Four minutes 15. But I guess we'll just keep going until you get it open, right? Hey. Good work. Didn't make the five-minute threshold, but you made it. It kicked my butt. Well, the hammer was making progress, but I think ultimately worked against me. Yeah, I grinded the crap out of it and I still didn't even cut all the way through the metal. That's got to be at least two, maybe even three times thicker. Oh, it's thick. That's hefty. That's a hefty safe.

36 Now we're going to see what can fit inside. We've got a P365 right here. That looks like it fits just fine. It's hard to unlock. There we go. Maxim 9 is not going to fit. It's not going to fit. And then we've got the M4 chambered in .22. Also not going to fit. That's for our Amazon Basics. You got [...] worth of security there.

07 This is a fit test with our Billconch. If you wanted to do a phone, obviously you're easily fitting a phone in there. A lot of space to play around. Battery, that's a good size for your, like, a DSLR camera or similar, right? You could maybe slam... Laptop, no good. The P365 SIG Sauer, that will fit in there easily. It would definitely rattle around. It's not going to be snug against the lid. The foam isn't tall enough. And we've got the Maxim 9. This is like full-size 9 millimeter. It's also got the suppressor on it, so it's pretty big. And that will fit the Maxim 9 easily. So that's a nice size safe right there. Does it fit our M4 .22? That's not gonna fit. It's not gonna fit in there. As far as size goes, I would say that's pretty good.

02 P365. That fits with ease. This is the larger StopBox. Maxim 9. That looks like you could probably figure out a way. I think that, yeah, that'll barely fit the Maxim 9. And no, it's not gonna work. Of course it's not gonna work.

21 Does fit a phone. A nice fit there. Can you fit a laptop? You cannot fit a laptop. You fit a DeWalt battery, not closed. Starting to get hot out here. P365 SIG, and fits easily. You could probably fit two in there, I would imagine. This is your SilencerCo Maxim 9. It also, it's a barely fit type of situation. All right, so no bueno on the Tippmann. Basically a full-size handgun is about the maximum you're gonna get there.

02 First we're gonna see if it fits the phone. It fits the phone. Next we're gonna see if it fits the battery. It fits the battery. And then obviously if it fits the battery, it's gonna be tall enough for the laptop, but is it wide enough? Here we go. Boom. It fits your laptop. That's gonna fit your DSLRs. It's gonna fit your laptop. It's gonna fit your handbags. It's gonna fit a lot more volume. P365 going in. Will it fit? It fits. Our Maxim 9, will it fit? They both fit. Tippmann Arms Co., Fort Wayne, Indiana, USA. Oh my. First one. It's a tight fit, but it'll fit. So this actually has pluck foam that you could change the size and shape of whatever you want in there.

56 [...] I think we could probably fit all of the other safes that we've tried today inside of this safe. So that's pretty cool. So we are able to fit two handguns in there. Let's see if we can fit the SBR and a handgun. We fit all of the handguns in there. We might have to arrange them properly, but I think we can. Yep, we could. We could fit all three handguns in the Elite. That's pretty sweet. First test, we're gonna see if we can fit the laptop in. We got a laptop. We got a phone. Could it also do the battery? Making it all fit. Lots of electronics, lots of storage space. That's the Boosted Safe Elite.

48 That was awesome. That was so much fun. Thank you guys for coming out. We're gonna destroy these safes on the way out and grind them up. It's [inaudible]. All right, here we go.

13 Got some fun today busting up some safes. Boosted Safe Elite can hold all your valuables, your DSLRs, your cameras, three handguns. Get one today. Boostedsafe.com.
