Boosted Safe vs The Headrest Safe · specs checked Oct 23, 2026
Boosted Safe vs Headrest Safe: the headrest, or the anchors.
The Headrest Safe replaces a front-seat headrest and locks into the seat with a toggle bolt. Boosted Safe clips to the LATCH anchors (called ISOFIX outside the US) in the back seat, the steel bars welded to the car’s body to hold a child seat. Both hide in plain sight. Here is how they differ, from each maker’s own pages.

Fair is fair
Where the Headrest Safe is the better buy.
If one of these is the job, buy the Headrest Safe. We would rather you owned the right safe.
- It rides up front. It installs in the front passenger headrest. Ours takes a spot on the back seat.
- It takes no seat.It replaces a part the car already has, so the seat and the floor stay free. Ours uses a seat in the back.
- It looks like part of the car.A headrest in a matching color and trim is hard to spot. The Vulcan comes in five colors, leatherette or cloth.
- The Slide travels. The Slide’s inner lockbox slides out, and the maker says it is TSA compliant.
Where we win
Where Boosted Safe is the better buy.
If you carry more than one pistol, these matter more.
- Room for the rest of it.14.3 L inside. It fits a 16-inch MacBook Pro. The largest Headrest Safe interior is 8.5 × 3.5 × 6 in, about 2.9 L, by its own figures.
- Thicker steel.16-gauge steel on the Elite, 12-gauge on the Golden Gate. The Headrest Safe lists an 18-gauge body (20-gauge on the Compact) with a 16-gauge door. A lower gauge number is thicker steel.
- No removable headrest needed.Every Headrest Safe model needs removable, two-post headrests. Ours needs LATCH anchors, standard on US passenger vehicles from model year 2003.
- On California’s roster. The Golden Gate Elite is a CDOJ certified gun safe. The Headrest Safe is not on the roster (checked Oct 23, 2026).

Boosted Safe vs Headrest Safe: straight answers.
What is the difference between Boosted Safe and the Headrest Safe?
Where it lives and how big it is. The Headrest Safe replaces a front-seat headrest and locks into the seat with a toggle bolt. Boosted Safe clips to the LATCH anchors in the back seat, the steel bars welded to the car’s body to hold a child seat. The Headrest Safe holds a full-size pistol. Boosted Safe holds a 16-inch MacBook Pro or several handguns (unloaded) and looks like a booster seat.
How does the Headrest Safe attach?
It replaces the headrest. The maker says it locks into place with a toggle bolt that deploys when it is inserted into the seat, and that installation is tool-free with no drilling. Its manual uses an included L wrench to fit the mounting plate to your headrest posts (Headrest Safe FAQ).
Will the Headrest Safe fit my car?
Its shop page says every model needs removable, two-post headrests, and names trucks and SUVs such as the F-150, Silverado, RAM 1500, Tundra and Tahoe. Check that your front headrest lifts out on two posts.
Will a Boosted Safe fit my car?
US passenger vehicles from model year 2003 have LATCH anchors. Heavy trucks over 8,500 lb GVWR and some two-seat vehicles can be exceptions, so check your vehicle.
Does a laptop fit in the Headrest Safe?
Not by the published sizes. The largest Headrest Safe interior is 8.5 × 3.5 × 6 in. The Boosted Safe Elite is 15.1 × 13.6 × 4.25 in inside and fits a 16-inch MacBook Pro.
Does a Boosted Safe take up a seat?
Yes. It sits on the back seat at a LATCH position, where a booster seat would. The Headrest Safe takes no seat. That is a fair point in its favor.
Is the Headrest Safe on the California DOJ roster?
No. The Headrest Safe is not a manufacturer on California’s roster of firearm safety devices (checked Oct 23, 2026). From Boosted Safe, the Golden Gate Elite is a CDOJ certified gun safe (see the listing). The Golden Gate Basic is not certified yet. This is not legal advice.
Is either one theft-proof?
No. With enough time and tools nothing is secure. The job is to raise the time and the tool count. Bolt cutters go through a cable. Steel anchors welded to the car’s body take more of both. Watch the pull test.
Can I keep a gun in a Boosted Safe?
Yes, handguns, stored unloaded. For California, the Golden Gate Elite is the one certified for firearms. Laws differ by state: see where it is legal to keep a gun in a car.
What comes with a Boosted Safe?
30-day money back. Lifetime warranty. Break-in replacement guarantee. Free shipping on orders $299+. The quilted cover, a steel security cable and foam are in the box, and every Elite comes with a Faraday bag that fits a 16-inch laptop, an iPad or a phone. Buying for two vehicles? Buy one, get one half off: 25% off every safe when you buy 2 to 9, 30% off at 10 or more, all six safes counted together. It does not stack with other codes.
