Yes, that's exactly what it's for. Lock the handgun in the Elite at the truck, hunt, and open it with your fingerprint when you're back. Firearm transport and storage laws vary by state, so check your local law first.

Will a thief at the trailhead know it's a safe?

What happens if the battery dies?
A low-battery indicator gives you advance warning, and the backup key opens the safe even with a dead battery. Keep the key somewhere secure and separate from the vehicle.
