Gifts for Hunters 2026: What Every Gift Guide Leaves Out

Boots, gloves, thermos and binoculars on a truck tailgate at sunrise

The most useful gift for a hunter who already owns the knife and the thermos is a locked steel safe for the truck, for the handgun, optics, tags and wallet that stay behind while they walk to the stand. It will not hold the rifle, and we say so below. Every gift guide lists the gear. None of them covers what happens to it in a parked truck. Our page for hunters shows the setup.

Key takeaways

  • Rural owners had about 2.2 times the odds of leaving a firearm in a vehicle more often than metropolitan owners (Injury Epidemiology, 2026).
  • Pickups were among the most common vehicles in a 2026 survey of firearm thefts from vehicles (Prevention Science).
  • A back-seat safe holds a handgun, optics, tags and a wallet. It does not hold a rifle.
  • Before you buy, find out two things: does the truck have a back seat, and does that seat have LATCH anchors.
  • With enough time and tools nothing is secure. The job is to raise the time and the tool count.

Why a truck safe beats another knife

A hunter's truck sits at a trailhead before dawn, at camp all day and outside a motel on the way home. What rides in it is not cheap. A 2026 survey in Injury Epidemiology found that 24.6% of owners who leave a firearm in a vehicle use the center console and 16.7% the glovebox. Only 19.7% use a device designed for it. Rural owners do this more often. A 2026 survey in Prevention Science of firearm thefts from vehicles names pickups first among the vehicles involved. That rests on 53 reported thefts, so it is a pattern and not a rate.

What nobody publishes is how many of those thefts happen during hunting season. We looked. So we will not tell you that deer camp is a hot spot. We will tell you it is a long week of parked trucks.

How to buy this gift without giving it away

A safe is a fitted gift. You need a few facts, and you can get them without asking.

  1. Look at the back seat. A crew or double cab usually has a full rear seat. A regular cab has none, so a back-seat safe is the wrong gift for that truck.
  2. Find the anchors. Feel in the crease between the seat back and the cushion for two steel bars, or look for the small child-seat symbol. Our gun safe for trucks page goes cab by cab.
  3. Check a heavy truck. FMVSS 225 covers trucks up to 8,500 lb GVWR. A heavy-duty pickup may be outside it, so check the vehicle.
  4. Keep the receipt handy. Every safe comes with a 30-day money back, and the terms are on the warranty and guarantee page.

What it holds, and what it does not

The inside measures 15.1 x 13.6 x 4.25 inches (14.3 L). Anything longer than 15 inches does not fit. That means no rifle, no shotgun and no spotting scope with a long tripod. For long guns, a locked hard case out of sight or a fitted under-seat box is the answer, and the best way to store a gun in a truck covers those.

What does fit is the small expensive stuff: a handgun, a rangefinder, binoculars, tags, a wallet and a phone left behind on purpose. Measure the optics first. We do not promise that a named item fits.

Cold mornings

A gift for November has to work in November. A fingerprint reader can struggle with cold, dry fingers, and batteries lose power in the cold. That is why we like three ways in: fingerprint safes in winter has the detail. Cold also has its own effect on what is stored, covered in leaving a gun in a cold car.

What we would do

We would give the Golden Gate Elite. It is 12-gauge steel, weighs 37.4 lb, and opens by fingerprint, keypad or key, with USB-C emergency power if the four AA batteries go flat. It clips to the truck's LATCH anchors (called ISOFIX outside the US), the steel bars welded to the truck's body to hold a child seat. The release is inside the safe. It comes off the anchors only after it has been opened. No tools and no drilling, so the recipient can do it on Christmas morning.

The Golden Gate Elite is certified for firearms and is a CDOJ certified gun safe (California DOJ listing). Firearms are stored unloaded. It is not fireproof or waterproof. The box also holds a steel security cable, a three-layer foam insert, a black booster-seat cover and a Faraday bag. See the full spread of options in our gift guide for gun owners. With enough time and tools nothing is secure. The job is to raise the time and the tool count.

Questions

Is a truck safe a good gift for a hunter?

For a hunter who leaves anything of value in a parked truck, yes. It covers the handgun, optics, tags and wallet that stay behind. It does not cover a rifle. Check for a back seat and anchors first, and pick a lock with a key behind it for cold mornings.

Will it hold a hunting rifle?

No. The interior is 15.1 by 13.6 by 4.25 inches, and anything longer than 15 inches will not fit. A rifle needs a locked hard case, kept out of sight, or a fitted under-seat box. Check what your state asks for during transport.

What if I do not know their truck?

Look at the back seat and the crease for the two anchor bars. A regular cab has no rear seat, so choose something else. A heavy-duty truck over 8,500 lb GVWR may not have anchors. If you cannot tell, ask a family member or use a 30-day return as your margin.

Will it arrive in time?

The Golden Gate Elite is on preorder and the product page shows shipping as November. Order with that in mind and check the page for the current status on the day you buy.
