Car Lock Box: What a Cable Box Does, on Film

Black lock box with a thin steel cable looped around it on a car seat

A car lock box is a small locking case held in the car by a steel cable looped around a seat bracket or another fixed part, and in our filmed pull test every cable-held box came off the seat by hand in under a minute. That does not make them useless. It makes them travel cases, good in a hotel room and at the airport and weaker in a car you walk away from. Our car safe comparison covers the alternatives.

Key takeaways

  • A lock box for a car is usually a case and a cable. The cable is the part that decides how long it stays.
  • In our filmed test, cables failed three ways: the cable snapped, the tether end let go, or the box bent until the cable slid out.
  • The fastest box was out in 7 seconds. Bolt cutters take about four seconds on a cable.
  • A gun lock box for a car may meet a state's locked-container rule and still leave the car. Those are separate questions.
  • With enough time and tools nothing is secure. The job is to raise the time and the tool count.

What a car lock box actually is

Most of what is sold as a car lock box is one of three things. A steel or polymer case with a cable, like the Vaultek LifePod 20, which ships with a 48-inch steel cable. A personal travel safe whose cable doubles as a handle, like the Master Lock 5900D, which its maker sells for "recreation, campus, office, travel, or leisure use". Or a heavier steel box with a cable and holes for bolting it down, like the SnapSafe range. Every time from our own film is in our car safe test results.

All of them are sold honestly as portable. Vaultek's instructions tell you to wrap the tether around something such as a seat bracket under your seat, then lock the end inside the case. That is the whole attachment.

What happened when we pulled on them

We put boxes from four other brands and three Boosted Safes on a mock car seat fitted with child-seat anchors, and let two grown men pull. Published Jun 30, 2026. The raw tests are one click away for each box.

Amazon Basics lock box in a car Cable The box bent around the cable until the cable slid out. Under a minute.
Billconch car safe test Thin cable The cable gave way. Under a minute.
Vaultek Slider in a car Tether A steel safe that held until the end of its tether let go. Under a minute.
StopBox, two plastic boxes Cable and bracket Came free by hand in 7 and 9 seconds.
Boosted Safe Elite LATCH anchors Still latched after 30 seconds of pulling. Then hand tools and hammers: dented, still shut.
Boosted Safe Basic LATCH anchors Still latched after 30 seconds of pulling. Then pried open at 2 minutes 20 seconds.

Read this with its limits. It is one filmed test with specific boxes, people and tools. Product details can change after filming. It is not a lab rating, it does not cover every cable, and we make one of the things being tested. Watch the pull test and judge it yourself. Our Smash and Grab series shows the same choice from the thief's side, played as comedy.

Why the cable is the weak part

Three reasons, and none of them are about the lock.

  • It is in the cabin. A loop around a seat bracket is within reach of anyone who opened a door or a window.
  • It has one job and several ways to lose. The wire, the crimp, the end that locks into the box, and the box wall around that end.
  • The thief does not need to open anything. Once the box is out, the lock is a problem for later, somewhere private.

Our own safes ship with a steel cable too. We call it a second tether, or the option where there are no anchors. We do not call it equal to the anchors. See anchors vs a security cable.

Where a lock box for a car still makes sense

  • Moving between places. Home, hotel room, range and rental. Portable is the point, and that is what these are for.
  • Short stops with the box out of sight. Under a seat, the cable tight, for the length of a coffee.
  • Mounted. If the box has mounting holes and you are willing to use them, you have changed the attachment. Read the maker's instructions for your vehicle.
  • As a second layer. A small case inside a larger locked space keeps things organized and separates what you want separated.

The gun lock box question

A gun lock box for a car answers two different questions. One is legal: does it meet the rule where you are? Many state rules are written around a locked container, and what counts varies. Read what counts as a locked container and your state's rules. This is not legal advice.

The other is practical: does it stay in the car? Cars are now the largest source of stolen guns. Nearly 62,000 guns were reported stolen from vehicles in 2022 in the 337 cities studied, one every nine minutes, according to Everytown Research. That is not a national total. A box can satisfy a statute and still leave with a thief. Firearms are stored unloaded. For firearms, the model we would pick is the Golden Gate Elite, which is certified for firearms and listed on the California DOJ roster.

What we would do

If the box travels with you, buy the travel case and accept what it is. If what is inside stays in the car while you are gone, we would hold it to the anchors. For a laptop, a camera, a wallet or a passport, that is the Boosted Safe Elite: 16-gauge steel, 15.1 x 13.6 x 4.25 inches inside, fingerprint, keypad and key. It fits a 16-inch MacBook Pro. It weighs 15.4 lb and takes a rear seat, so it is not the thing to carry through an airport.

The release is inside the safe. It comes off the anchors only after it has been opened. US passenger vehicles from model year 2003 have the anchors, and you can check your vehicle first. It is not fireproof or waterproof. With enough time and tools nothing is secure. The job is to raise the time and the tool count.

Questions

Is a car lock box secure?

It is as secure as its cable and what the cable wraps around. In our filmed test every cable-held box came off the seat by hand in under a minute, and bolt cutters take about four seconds on a cable. The lock may hold fine. That matters less once the box has left the car.

What is the best lock box for a car?

For travel, a case from a maker that publishes its cable details and its interior size, used where you can watch it. For a car you walk away from, a box held by something stronger than a cable: mounted to the vehicle or on the anchors. Decide which job you have before you compare locks.

Can a lock box go under the seat?

Many can, and being out of sight helps. Measure your seat clearance first. Under a seat is also a place people check. Keep the cable tight around a fixed part so the box cannot slide into easy reach, and take it with you when it matters.

Does a lock box count as a locked container for a gun?

Often it can, depending on the state and on the box. Rules differ on what counts and where it can be. Federal safe-passage law excludes the glove compartment and console as the locked container. Read your state's text before you rely on it. This is not legal advice.
