The best gun safe for a Ford Ranger with a back seat is one that locks to the rear LATCH anchors, because a pickup has no trunk to hide anything in. A SuperCrew has a real back seat, and if the seat has the anchors, a Boosted Safe fits with no drilling. A Ranger with no back seat needs a different answer, and we cover that below.
Which Ranger do you have?
- SuperCrew: four doors and a full back seat. The straightforward fit.
- SuperCab: smaller rear seats. Check the seat crease and the manual for lower anchors before you order.
- Older regular cab: no back seat means no rear anchors, so a Boosted Safe won't fit. Look at a console or mounted box instead.
Our truck gun safe guide by cab walks through each one, and the fit check takes about a minute.
Console safe or back-seat safe?
This is the question Ranger owners ask most. A console safe stays out of sight and leaves your seats free, but it usually fits a small handgun and only exists if someone built one for your year. Some owners say a safe on the back seat feels too out in the open. It's fair to look at your own truck and decide. Tinted rear windows and a booster-seat cover help a lot. Our console safe guide compares them. Our guide to choosing a car handgun safe goes through it step by step.
The glove box isn't the answer. Some states, New York among them, say a glove box doesn't count as a locked container. Check your state's rule.
How it locks to the Ranger
Two steel latches grab the lower anchor bars in the seat crease, and the release sits inside the locked safe. To take it off the car, someone has to open it first. There is no cable to cut and no drilling. Our guide to LATCH and ISOFIX anchors shows what the bars look like, and the patented design page shows the latch.
We tried to rip the safes out on film. On our car safe pull test the cabled boxes came free fast. A screwdriver pried the Basic open at 2 minutes 20 seconds, and the Elite stayed shut. No safe is theft-proof. With enough time and tools, nothing is secure. The job is to raise the time and the tools it takes.
Which Boosted Safe to pick
- Boosted Safe Elite: the one most people buy. Fingerprint, keypad and key, and it fits a 16-inch MacBook Pro.
- Boosted Safe Basic: the same idea with a code and key, for a lower price.
- Mini: a certified booster seat with a locked compartment, and the smallest footprint.
- Golden Gate Elite: 12-gauge steel, 37 lb, and certified for firearms by the California DOJ.

Questions
Does it hold a rifle?
No. Use a locked hard case or a full-width under-seat box for long guns.
What about the Ranger Raptor?
The same rule applies. Check that your back seat has the lower bars.
Will it take up the whole back seat?
No. It takes one outer seat while it's installed. It comes off in about a minute with the safe open.
