The best car safe for a BMW X3, X1 or X5 is one that doesn't depend on the console. A Boosted Safe locks to the lower anchor bars in the back seat, and these BMWs have those bars. If yours has the anchors, it fits, and you don't need a part built for your exact console.
Why BMW owners end up here
A fitted console safe only exists if a maker built one for that console. Owners on gun forums report coming up empty on the X3, X1 and X5, and some say there's little to mount to around the ducting. Check any maker's fit list before you count on one. Our console safe guide covers what those safes do well and where they stop.
The other common answer is a lock box on a cable. It's cheap and it travels, but the cable is the weak link. Bolt cutters take about four seconds, and the box leaves with them.
Where it goes in a BMW
It sits on an outer rear seat. Open the rear door and feel along the crease where the seat back meets the seat bottom. On some leather seats the bars sit behind small slits or covers, so press in with your fingers before you decide they aren't there. On a three-row X5, use the second row. The fit check takes about a minute.
The trade-off is real: it takes that seat while it's installed. It comes off in about a minute when you need the seat back, and you open the safe to release it.
How it locks to the BMW
Two steel latches grab the lower anchor bars in the seat crease, and the release sits inside the locked safe. To take it off the car, someone has to open it first. There is no cable to cut and no drilling. Our guide to LATCH and ISOFIX anchors shows what the bars look like, and the patented design page shows the latch.
We tried to rip the safes out on film. On our car safe pull test the cabled boxes came free fast. A screwdriver pried the Basic open at 2 minutes 20 seconds, and the Elite stayed shut. No safe is theft-proof. With enough time and tools, nothing is secure. The job is to raise the time and the tools it takes.
Which Boosted Safe to pick
- Boosted Safe Elite: the one most people buy. Fingerprint, keypad and key, and it fits a 16-inch MacBook Pro.
- Boosted Safe Basic: the same idea with a code and key, for a lower price.
- Mini: a certified booster seat with a locked compartment, and the smallest footprint.
- Golden Gate Elite: 12-gauge steel, 37 lb, and certified for firearms by the California DOJ.
You can see them side by side on the car safes page or the comparison chart. A firearm goes in unloaded, and the laws on leaving one in a car vary by state, so read our state guide first.
Questions
Does it scratch BMW leather?
It sits on the seat like a child seat does. If you are careful about your leather, put a seat protector under it, the same way you would for a car seat.
Does it work on the X3 and X5 with the anchors hidden?
Yes, if the bars are there. Hidden bars are common. Feel along the crease, and check the child-seat section of the owner's manual if you can't find them.
Is it better than a console safe?
It is a different trade. A console safe stays out of sight and leaves your seats free. An anchored safe holds a laptop, moves between cars and needs no part made for your console.
