- In your vehicle, no license needed.Since Sep 1, 2021, if you’re 21 or older and not otherwise barred from having a gun, you can carry a handgun in your own vehicle without a license. If it’s in plain view, it has to be in a holster.
- No lock-box law for adults.We couldn’t find a Texas law that makes adults lock up a handgun left in a parked vehicle.
- Your work parking lot.Texas law generally lets employees keep a legal firearm locked in their own vehicle in the company lot. There are exceptions.

Do I need a safe to leave a gun in my truck in Texas?
As far as we can find, Texas doesn’t make adults lock up a gun left in a vehicle. A safe is about keeping it from leaving with a thief. This is a plain-English summary, not legal advice. Laws change. Check Texas’s current law before you rely on it.
Is it a real gun safe?
Yes. The Golden Gate Elite is 12-gauge steel, and the California DOJ lists it as a certified firearm safety device. Texas doesn’t keep a list like that, so California’s is the one to check.
Can I store a loaded firearm in it?
No. Firearms go in unloaded.
Will it fit my truck?
Crew and extended cabs with rear seats usually have the anchors. Heavy-duty pickups over 8,500 lb and regular cabs may not. Check yours in a minute.
Is there a deal if I buy more than one?

Can a thief just take the whole safe?
It’s latched to steel anchors welded to the vehicle’s body, and the release is inside the safe. To take it out, someone has to open it first. With enough time and enough tools nothing is secure. Our job is to make a smash-and-grab take far more of both than a thief brings to a parking lot.
