California DOJ certified
Is there a California-approved car gun safe?
Yes. The Golden Gate is on the California DOJ roster of certified firearm safety devices, listed as a lock box from Boosted Safe LLC (see the listing). The listed model is the Golden Gate Elite. The Golden Gate Basic has not been tested yet, and the Boosted Safe Elite and Basic are not on the roster.
What California asks: under Penal Code 25140, a handgun left in an unattended car goes in the locked trunk, or in a locked container out of plain view. A glove box doesn’t count. Plain-English summary, not legal advice. More on the law.
The listing covers the Golden Gate Elite only. The Golden Gate Basic has not been tested yet.
The places you can’t carry in California are most of them.
Even with a CCW, the list of places your gun can’t go is long, and it changes. So the gun waits in the car. And in California, the car is where smash-and-grab happens.
- The glove box.California says it isn’t a locked container. Thieves open it first.
- The back of your SUV.Under PC 25140, the cargo area of an SUV, hatchback or wagon isn’t a trunk.
- A lock box on a cable.Bolt cutters take about four seconds, and the box leaves with them.
- Under the seat. The first place anyone looks.
How many car break-ins happen in California?
reported to police in , 2025.
is closer to the real number. Only about 1 in 4 thefts is ever reported.
That’s roughly one every in .
Your car has steel anchors. We lock a safe to them.
You might not know they’re there. Every passenger vehicle sold in the US since the 2003 model year has them, by federal standard FMVSS 225. A child seat clicks into them. So does a Boosted Safe.
- Locked to the car.Two steel latches grab the same bars that hold a child seat in a crash. The release is inside the safe.
- Looks like a booster seat.Nobody breaks a window for a booster seat.
- Opens in a second.Fingerprint first. Keypad and key behind it.
Why it's a Boosted Safe
Steel. Fingerprint. Anchors.
California gun in car law, in plain English
What California says about a handgun left in your car.
This is the short version of Penal Code 25140, the rule for a handgun left in an unattended car. Some city rules from before 2016 still apply too. It’s a plain-English summary, not legal advice. Laws change and cities add their own, so check California’s current law, and your city’s, before you rely on it. PC 25140 · CA DOJ: traveling with firearms
- Lock it up.In the trunk, or in a locked container. A glove box doesn’t count.
- Keep it out of sight. The container goes out of plain view, and that means anything someone can see through the windows, tinted or not.
- An SUV has no trunk. Not under this law. The back of an SUV, hatchback or wagon doesn’t count as one.
- Driving is a different rule. While you drive, a handgun goes unloaded, in the trunk or in a locked container (PC 25610).

Straight answers.
Is there a California-approved car gun safe?
Yes. The Golden Gate is on the California DOJ roster of certified firearm safety devices, listed as a lock box from Boosted Safe LLC. The listed model is the Golden Gate Elite. See the listing.
Are the Boosted Safe Elite and Basic on the California roster?
No. Only the Golden Gate Elite is listed. The Elite and Basic are great for laptops, cameras and cash; for a firearm in California, get the Golden Gate Elite.
Is the Golden Gate Elite really California DOJ certified?
Yes. It’s on the California DOJ’s Roster of Firearm Safety Devices Certified for Sale, listed under Boosted Safe LLC, model “Golden Gate”, type lock box. See the entry on the DOJ site. It’s the only Boosted Safe model on the list.
Is the Golden Gate Basic certified too?
Not yet. It hasn’t been tested. If you want the one on California’s list, get the Golden Gate Elite.
Does it make me compliant with Penal Code 25140?
We can’t promise that, and no box can. The law asks for the trunk, or a locked container out of plain view. Read the law, check your city, and decide how you’ll use it. This is a plain-English summary, not legal advice. Laws change and cities add their own. Check California’s current law, and your city’s, before you rely on it.
Why not the regular Boosted Safe Elite?
It’s a great safe for laptops, cameras and cash. For firearms we recommend the Golden Gate Elite: thicker 12-gauge steel, and it’s the one on California’s list.
Can I store a loaded firearm in it?
No. Firearms go in unloaded. California also wants a handgun unloaded while you drive with it (PC 25610).
I have an SUV with no trunk. Now what?
Under PC 25140 the back of an SUV isn’t a trunk, so the law points you to a locked container out of plain view. Check the law itself, not just our FAQ.
When does the Golden Gate Elite ship?
It’s a pre-order that ships in November, and the pre-order price is $35 off.
Is there a deal if I buy more than one?
Yes. Buy 2 to 9 safes and every safe in the order is 25% off. Buy 10 or more and every one is 30% off. Mix any models, Golden Gate included. Refurbished safes don’t count, and the deal doesn’t stack with other codes.
Will it fit my car?
Most passenger vehicles from the 2003 model year on have the anchors. Check yours in a minute.
What if I don’t like it?
Put it in your car and live with it. If it isn’t for you, send it back inside 30 days for a refund. Defects are covered for as long as you own it.
One Boosted Safe is on California’s list. Put it in your car.
